Garden Grow

A Little Garden All Potted Up

Yesterday, I had a lovely time in my garden. I've been growing some veg and herbs from seed, and thanks to my obsessive diligence everything apart from the parsley (stupid parsley) had sprouted and was ready for putting out into pots yesterday. My parents were visiting, and as they like mucking about with plants too, it all worked out very nicely.

My courgette plants have been an enormous success so far - so many of them sprouted that I've got more than I can handle and could give three away to my parents and keep two to give to a friend. The small plants (which already look very vigorous) went into growbags and will be slurping down water until the summer.

There were more tomato seedlings than I thought I'd planted - I've kept 21 of them and given some away - and I've got 15 aubergine seedlings which is quite a lot. If it all works, I'm going to have more vegetables than I can really cope with.

The herbs are going fairly nicely, but due to a very amateurish mistake involving me not labelling them, I am not sure what all of them are. I know what I planted, though, so it'll just be a process of elimination. The dill, chives and rocket are fairly obvious, and the parsley is spottable because it's only just germinated, but at the moment the oregano, basil, thyme and mint are all just little dudes with two leaves. Bless.

In the the garden centre (the wonderful Kitchen Garden Cafe) I also got a little mature rosemary plant, some marjoram, two lavender plants and two little saxifrages. These went into big ceramic planters at the end of the rows, and on all my planters I've drawn smily faces and written my name, due to the fact my neighbour is displaying light-fingered tendencies with a barefaced cheek.

I love the smiley faces - looks like a great wee kitchen garden!
